KRAVET DESIGN COMPETITION
FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY
concept statement
‘Renewal’ is a hand block-printed fabric modeled for the Kravet line, and is designed for a custom furniture piece within the residence of a luxury single-family home in Kyoto. The design is inspired by the deep cultural significance of the cherry blossom to Japanese society. A half-drop, bold pattern motif connects to the idea of rebirth and a second chance at life. Featuring dynamic, organic forms, the design was created for a client who is choosing to age in place in their Kyoto penthouse. Taeko Onuki’s song 4:00 A.M. represents the era during the 80’s known as City Pop in Japan, where the upbeat rhythm of the urbanite lifestyle was met with the traditional elements of Japanese folklore and strong symbolism of nature.
