SHINKAN-PEN STATIONERY

DESIGN CONCEPT

The design of the retail space draws inspiration from the movement of Japanese calligraphy, a traditional art that is still practiced in Kyoto today. The kanji (Japanese character) for tree, which informs the layout of the retail space, references the origins of the paper products that will be sold in the store. The emphasis on movement within the practice of calligraphy will be achieved through structured circulation paths that support an efficient point of sale and shopping experience. Separation is established between the merchandise and staff zones.

PROJECT CONTEXT

The Shinkan-Pen Stationery store is a retail space that occupies a roughly 2,700 sqft area on the ground floor of the Kinkaku-Ji Hotel. The store is located nearby to other international chain and local stationery stores, such as Muji in the adjacent Aeon Mall. The space features a street entrance, along with direct access from the hotel lobby.

PRIMARY STREET ENTRY
POINT OF SALE

The design prioritizes efficiency in order to boost overall sales for the client, achieved through careful consideration of circulation at the point of sale to allow for seamless exchanges between the customers and staff, while also providing visibility over the merchandise areas as a means of theft prevention. The point of sale is located adjacent to the other back of house facilities and is near the main street entrance/exit to allow for guests to quickly leave the store following their purchase. The use of durable materials also demonstrates an understanding of this dynamic use of the space.

With the notion of calligraphy being integral to the concept of the retail space, unique architectural forms are used to highlight these prominent pieces of merchandise within the store. Wood slats rise from the floor plane and terminate at the ceiling height of the calligraphy room, where patrons may test the product in its traditional form. The calligraphy room strategically receives north facing sun exposure to allow for diffused light to enter the space without casting harsh shadows. A frosted glass finish allows for privacy as well as enables other guests to determine occupancy.
