2024 IAD CHARETTE
TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA

DESIGN CONCEPT
The gala pays homage to the early influences of set design and theatrical performance through the conceptualization of a stage production. The gala draws inspiration from the decade of the 1990s as an era of collective shift in popular culture and design. The event embraces elements that reflect this historical context, including appropriate finish materials and engaging branding. The influence of the ‘90s is embodied within the design of the celebration space through dynamic and layered lighting as well as materiality that reflects a sense of the decade.
PROJECT CONTEXT
The charette is an annual design competition hosted by the Interior Architecture & Design (IAD) Department at Florida State University. Earning second place in the 2024 charette, I worked alongside a team of three students at various stages in their curriculum to design and program the department’s 50th Anniversary Gala, hosting distinguished alumni and celebrating decades of progress within the design profession. Our team was tasked to reimagine the existing event space within the Florida State University Alumni Hall for this event.

FLOOR PLAN

Pulling inspiration from a popular 90’s sitcom, the ‘Friends’ couch invites guests to gather for a photo-op to commemorate the event & enjoy the company of their peers. Film reel posters of past and present faculty remind guests of the important figures that helped shape their careers. The branded elements of the photo-op play off of recognizable imagery and cultural references. Furnishings such as a director’s chair for the photographer, and movable spotlights establish a visual connection to the studio productions that helped bring popular sitcoms to life.

In order to achieve a successful & unified design, the materiality of the ballroom space consistently utilizes dynamic spotlighting and other strategic illumination, such as globe lighting around the past and present imagery of the department as an ode to a backstage dressing room or a marquee sign. Custom-modeled film roll centerpieces with prominent clapperboards adorn each table, reinforcing the theme of a stage production. Shimmering gold finishes imprinted with the anniversary logo & elegant fabrics achieve a branded environment that is suitable for a gala.

The design of the stage features a dynamic backdrop, resembling a retro theater entrance. Plays of form that mirror the tall volume of the existing space create a sense of grandeur that celebrates the evening’s activities and the distinguished alumni. Adequate space for a piano and other instruments accommodates the planned performance by members of the School of Music, who are set to perform classical renditions of 90’s hits. A custom-modeled Alumni Award inspired by the Hollywood ‘Walk of Fame’ will be on display throughout the evening & received by alumni onstage.
